Well chosen authentic words of affirmation are more than just polite things to say. They have the power to make people feel safe, seen, and valued. In my experience, receiving genuine compliments has often brightened my day and deepened my connections with others. This post explores how compliments influence well-being, shares personal stories of meaningful praise from clients and strangers, and offers practical tips on giving compliments that truly matter.
How Compliments Create a Sense of Safety and Being Seen
When someone compliments us sincerely, it sends a message that we are noticed and appreciated. This recognition can create a feeling of safety, as if the person sees us clearly and accepts us without judgment. I recall three moments with clients that illustrate this well:
Client One told me after a session, “You really listen and understand what I’m going through. I feel safe to open up here.” Her compliment was about my ability to create a supportive environment, which made me realize how important it is to foster trust.
Client Two said, “Your feedback helped me see my strengths in a new light. You shifted me. Now I feel more confident and can make changes..” This compliment highlighted how recognizing someone’s abilities can boost their self-esteem and well-being.
Client Three shared, “I appreciate that you didn't judge me. I feel feel truly seen and this is rare. This showed me that paying attention to personal details helps people feel valued beyond surface-level interactions.
Beyond clients, I have also received compliments from strangers that left a lasting impact o me.
A stranger once told me, “You are the coolest person I saw today. You are truly a wise woman. I can't believe I'm going to tell you this about my life...." This simple compliment reminded me how small acts of kindness can ripple outward and create connection.
Another stranger said, “You have a calm presence and I feel peaceful around you." Hearing this made me aware of how our energy affects others, even in brief encounters.
Their words were not flattery or false praise, but a quality I've fostered to allow people to be true to who they are. It's acknowledging someone’s worth and what they have brought to your life. It creates a moment of connection that supports emotional safety and trust.
Why Creating a Supportive Environment Matters
Feeling safe and seen is essential for well-being. When people experience this, they are more likely to open up, share their true selves, and build meaningful relationships. This skill is vital in love relationships, too. But only if the words are given with no agend or transactional meaning attached to it.
For years, I've been the receipient of secrets. Even strangers share their life. My sister laughs noticiing that all I say is "How are you?"
This strange thing happened to me even as early as the age of seven, when a second grade peer shared that she saw her deceased father visit her after he passed. My father was also privy to many shares from strangers.

Tips for Giving Meaningful Gratitude statements.
Authentic expressions of gratitude for a positive connection and practical tips:

Instead of vague praise like “You’re great,” say what exactly impressed you. For example, “I admire how patiently you explained that concept.”
Focus on effort and qualities
Complimenting effort, kindness, or creativity encourages growth. For example, “Your dedication to this project really shows.”

Notice small things
Compliments don’t have to be grand. Recognizing small positive details can brighten someone’s day.
Use body language
Smile, make eye contact, and use a warm tone to reinforce your words.
Encourage sharing
Invite people to talk about what they’re proud of or what they enjoy. This deepens connection.
